Shark attack kills 2 women in Egypt’s Red Sea

CAIRO, 4 July 2022:

Two women have died after they were attacked by a shark at a popular tourist destination on Egypt’s Red Sea Coast, Egyptian environment minister Yasmine Fouad confirmed yesterday.

Experts are investigating the circumstances of the accident, which took place in Sahl Hasheesh, in the southern part of Hurghada, on Friday, announced Fouad.

In a statement, Amr Hanafi, governor of the Red Sea, ordered the suspension of all activities in the vicinity of the incident following the attack.

Egyptian authorities have not given further information on the victims’ nationalities nor how the attack occurred.

One of the victims was an Austrian citizen, the European country’s foreign ministry confirmed Saturday.

Shark attacks have been relatively rare in the Red Sea in recent years.

In 2020, two Ukrainian citizens and their guide were injured in a shark attack.
