Man in Thai quarantine jumps off hotel room balcony

BANGKOK, 27 Aug 2020:

A Thai man undergoing compulsory quarantine after returning from Israel was found dead, believed to have committed suicide by jumping from his Alternative State Quarantine (ASQ) hotel room in Chon Buri.

Defence spokesman major general Kongcheep Tantrawanich said the 39-year-old man from northeastern province of Buriram had returned on Tuesday before checking in the ASQ hotel on the same day.

“The man died from injuries after jumping out from his room at about 4pm (local time) on Wednesday,” he said in a statement.

Initial investigation found the man had walked in and out of his room several times after checking in.

Thailand recorded one new Covid-19 case involving a 35-year-old Indian at an ASQ centre in Bangkok, and zero fatalities over the last 24 hours.

In a statement, Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) said the man arrived in Thailand on August 8 and was tested positive in the second test.

There were 22 passengers from the same flight who were also tested positive for Covid-19, it said.

“Since April 3, 87,200 people – both Thais and foreigners – have entered the kingdom and underwent or still undergoing compulsory quarantine. A total of 467 were tested positive for Covid-19.”

To date, Thailand has recorded 3,404 Covid-19 cases with 58 fatalities.

Meanwhile, Indonesia has recorded 2,719 Covid-19 new positive cases within a period of 24 hours – the highest recorded since the first case was detected last March 2.

Based on its government’s official website on Covid-19 today, the total number of cases has now risen to 162,884, while the total number of deaths from the viral infection has reached 7,064.

Between noon yesterday and noon today, 120 more deaths were reported in the republic.

Within that period, Jakarta recorded the highest number of positive cases at 760, bringing the tally to 36,213, and 11 more deaths. This is followed by East Java Province at 31,696 and the other 32 provinces.

East Java has the highest number of deaths so far at 2,282 followed by Jakarta (1,146), Central Java (937), South Sulawesi (356) and the other ;provinces.

Singapore has preliminarily confirmed 77 new cases of Covid-19 in the past 24 hours, taking the total number of infections in the republic to 56,572.

“Based on our investigations so far, there are two cases in the community, both of whom are Singaporeans,” the republic’s Ministry of Health said in its brief data released here today.

The ministry said there were five imported cases, who had all been placed on Stay-Home Notice or isolated upon arrival in Singapore.

In the full data released late yesterday, the republic had classified 871 of the reported cases as imported, 2,222 as community cases and 53,402 as dorm residents.

A total of 54,971 patients have fully recovered from the infection and been discharged from hospitals or community care facilities while 65 confirmed cases remain in hospital but none in the intensive care unit.

A total of 1,432 patients who have mild symptoms, or are clinically well but still test positive for Covid-19, have been isolated and are being cared for at community facilities.

To date, 27 people have died from complications due to Covid-19 in the republic.
