Coronavirus cases rising again in China

BEIJING, 12 April 2020:

China today said nearly 100 new cases of Covid-19 were recorded in the mainland, more than double of the coronavirus infections reported a day earlier,

However, there were no deaths reported in the 24 hours from yesterday morning, the National Health Commission said.

The health authorities said they had recorded 99 new cases until Saturday midnight and 97 involved travellers from abroad.

The health authorities reported 46 cases yesterday, of which 42 are patients who have travelled from abroad.

An unstoppable number of coronavirus cases imported into the mainland from abroad has sparked a wave of concerns in China.

Beijing had put a temporary ban on the entry of foreign citizens into the country on March 28. However, the restriction has not been able to contain the number of imported cases – which currently stands at 1,280.

Many Chinese have returned home from abroad since the virus engulfed the planet – as in China, the virus outbreak, as per the official figures, seems to be more or less under control.

This has led to a rise in the number of imported cases in the last few weeks as many had travelled from other hotspots of the virus.

The other two remaining cases of the 99 announced today were locals from the northeastern province of Heilongjiang.

The number of patients cured and discharged stands at 50 in the 24 hours from Saturday morning along with the 99 new infections, thus taking the number of active cases in the country to 1,138.

This broke the trend of continuous decline in the number of Covid-19 positive cases.

It also marked the second day since April 6 – after official statistics began in late January – when no fatalities occurred because of Covid-19 across the country.

The number of infections recorded in the country since the beginning of the pandemic stands at 82,052 along with 3,339 deaths. Some 77,575 people have been treated successfully.

So far, 718,881 people who came in contact with the infected individuals have been put under observation, of which 9,722 remain under monitoring including 82 suspected cases.

China recorded 63 asymptomatic infections recently, taking the total of such cases in observation to 1,086.

The Chinese government had on March 12 said the peak of infection had ended in the country.
