KUALA LUMPUR, 2 Aug 2017:
Malaysia will plant a tree for every gold medal won in the 29th Kuala Lumpur SEA Games and 9th ASEAN Para Games (KL2017), as an initiative to preserve the environment.
The programme called “One Medal One Tree” is the latest initiative by the Malaysian SEA Games Organising Committee (Masoc) to offset the carbon released during the KL2017.
Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin in his speech during the launch said the programme is in line with the mission of the KL2017 to leave a legacy behind after the games and to support efforts to restore the greenery in the country.
“KL2017 will not just be a platform to hunt for medals but a programme to leave behind a legacy that can have a positive impact on youths in the future. The ‘Green’ initiative will certainly create awareness of the need to preserve the environment through “green’ initiatives,” said Khairy after planting a tree at the Mini Forest situated at the Kuala Lumpur Sports City.
The tree planting programme was the first of four similar programmes in the pipeline.
Also present were Masoc chief executive officer Datuk Seri Zolkples Embong, Malaysia Landscape chairman Tun Jeanne Abdullah and SCGM Berhad executive chairman Datuk Seri Lee Hock Seng.
