SEREMBAN, 14 Feb 2018:
A special committee will be set up by the Ministry of Education (MoE) to conduct an internal inquiry on the death of a Form Two student – who was hit by a flying blade from a lawn tractor in a freak incident at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Tuanku Abdul Rahman, Gemas, Negeri Sembilan.
Two other students were also injured in the incident.
According to a statement issued by the ministry, the committee would be chaired by Negeri Sembilan education director.
“MoE expresses sadness, sympathy and regrets over the incident and also expresses its condolences to the family of the student involved.
“MoE also seeks the cooperation of all quarters to stop spreading information on the incident as a respect for the family of the student involved, as well as the teachers and students at the school.”
Based on the preliminary report, MoE said the incident happened while students at the school were having a rehearsal for the sports’ day parade at the school field.
“During the rehearsal, a lawn tractor was cutting grass nearby, about 30m away.
“When the tractor stopped, a loud sound was heard by students involved in the rehearsal.
“At the same time, teachers supervising the rehearsal found three students injured on the head, involving two Form Two students and a Form One student.”
Meanwhile, the aunt of Nur Afini Roslan – the 14-year-old student killed by a lawn tractor blade yesterday, said: “She was very active in archery.”
When met at the forensic unit of the Tuanku Jaafar Seremban Hospital here, she said the last time she met her niece was around December last year.
“It is understood that the incident happened when my niece and other students were having a rehearsal for the sports’ day parade at the school field.
“Nur Afini and her other siblings are very active in sports and she had also represented Pahang in archery. Her father was her coach.”
Two other students Abdullah Hazlan, 14, and Mohd Farhan Reza Badrol Hesam, 13, were injured in the freak accident that occurred at 10.30am.
Nur Afini was buried at the Kampung Felda Sungai Kelamah cemetery in Gemas last night.
When met at the funeral, the victim’s grand uncle Datuk Rabuan Pit – who is former sprint champion – said the last time he met Nur Afini was during Aidilfitri last year.
“She called me Pak Wan and always asked me on how to be a good athlete. She said she wanted to be like me and also a policewoman.”
Nur Afini’s father, Roslan Samad, 55, said he and his family accepted her death.
The school’s parent-teacher association president Mohd Yusoff Ismail hoped the public would stop spreading the photos of the incident.
