Music and comedy for anti-cancer charity

KUALA LUMPUR, 25 Feb 2025:

Cancer Research Malaysia (CRMY) held its second comedy night combining laughter, music, resilience and hope in the fight against cancer – Life Is Funny Too on Sunday Feb 23 at the HGH Convention Centre in Sentul.

This two-hour show brought together a stellar lineup of legendary local entertainers in an evening of comedy, music and shared purpose. With donations starting at RM100, the event saw more than 800 in attendance, including cancer survivors.

Following the success of the inaugural Life Is Funny event held last year, last night’s event was more than just an entertainment event. All proceeds went towards supporting groundbreaking research, early detection efforts and innovative treatments, that ensures Malaysians get access to life saving care.

With a rise in cancer cases in the country, CRMY is at the forefront of cancer research here, focusing on cancers that disproportionately affect Malaysians, including nasopharyngeal, cervical and breast cancer.

CRMY chief executive officer Andy Khoo said: “Life is Funny Too is not just about raising funds. It is about creating a moment where people can come together, laugh and be reminded of the strength of community in the face of cancer. We are incredibly grateful for the support from everyone who attended, donated and contributed to this event. Every donation helps bring us one step closer to a world free from the fear of cancer.”

Hosted by Dato’ Leonard Tan, comedians Joanne Kam Poh Poh and Douglas Lim plus acclaimed singer Ning Baizura put on a combined display of comedic brilliance and a moving musical performance to remind us of the healing power of laughter and music.

And what an entertaining night it was. From the get go, the charismatic Dato’ Tan set the energy and pace for the night, singing Bruno Mars’ Just the Way You Are, then changing costume midway and cracking jokes in Malay, Hokkien and Mandarin.

Joanne showed off her well-known flamboyant, no-holds barred lineup of hamsap jokes (which she “apologised” for, but explained cannot be helped because she is from Penang), followed after the intermission by Douglas’s hilarious digs at Chinese New Year gone wrong (vegetarian yee sang, and his take on the difference between Mat Salleh, Chinese and Malay firecrackers.

Ning closed the show with her soulful renditions of To Know Me, Pang Yau, Kau dan Aku and Awan Terpilih, and even came off stage to take selfie photos with fans.

If you missed last night’s event, mark your calendars for upcoming events to show support for CRMY’s mission.

On Sunday May 25, CRMY will host a charity fun run called “Race Against Cancer”. On Friday July 25, the organisation will celebrate its 25th anniversary with a gala dinner. For more information, please visit www.cancerresearch.my or make a donation to www.cancerresearch.my/donate.
