Antarctica Research Gallery opening in Terengganu

KUALA TERENGGANU,  16 Aug 2017:

The Terengganu Science and Creative Centre will set up the Antarctica Research Gallery through a collaboration between the state government, Sultan Mizan Antarctica Research Foundation (YPASM) and the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation  (MOSTI).

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Razif Abd Rahman said the gallery would showcase the results of research conducted by Malaysian scientists in Antarctica as well as its contribution to mankind.

“The gallery will record all the research activities conducted in Antarctica so that it could motivate more of the younger generation to pursue scientific knowledge in the area.

“This objective (to open the gallery) has been conveyed to MOSTI and YPASM.  It is a continuity of the Islamic Scientist programme which the state government launched some years ago.”

Each year, YPASM allocates RM500,000 for various research projects on Antarctica.

Ahmad Razif said the state government also hoped that MOSTI would provide a quota for students from Terengganu to be involved in programmes in Antarctica.

Malaysian scientists have carried out various research projects in Antarctica, especially relating to global environmental phenomena such as the thinning of the atmospheric ozone layer, global warming, climate change and changes in sea levels, and their effects on Earth.
