For an shopping platform which charges no commissions on sellers and provides free delivery (for purchases valued above RM30) to buyers, the first two years have been a successful growth trajectory for Shopee – which lays claim to being a leading e-commerce platform in Southeast Asia and Taiwan.
With its presence in seven markets, Shopee has chalked up about 80 million downloads across the region and over 180 million active listings by more than four million sellers, noted regional managing director Ian Ho.
To date, he said there are about 5,000 leading brands and distributors and since launching in 2015, the Shopee team has expanded to a total of over 2,500 employees.
With such a large base in place, Shopee is now turning to revenue generation – having begun with a small number of retailers in recent weeks and aiming to ramp up this income stream in coming months.
Ho described the business model as similar to Google Ad Words advertising, where retailers pay be to featured first everytime an online shopper looks for a product on the Shopee platform.
“We have to show retailers they gain a real sales advantage by paying to be listed first in product searches. So far, the pioneer batch of participating retailers have seen enough gains to continue with this programme.”
And to continue drawing in more retailers to this advertising scheme, Shopee will continue to run all kinds of sales campaigns and is conducting another to mark its second anniversary.
To gear up to the Shopee Birthday sale, it has begun a Birthday Frame Facebook Contest till Dec 12 – where participants stand a chance to win the grand prize of an iPad mini 4 worth RM1,899 and 500,000 Shopee coins by uploading Shopee’s Birthday Facebook frame on their own Facebook pages.
Additionally, Shopee will hold a weekly cash giveaway of RM500 as part of Shopee’s Snap & Win contest till Dec 22 – where participants snap and share their Shopee purchases on Instagram, and one lucky winner will be selected each week.

Every RM100 payment via FPX on Shopee also qualifies for prizes – including a trip for two to Honolulu worth RM15,000 and an iPhone X worth RM5,500.
