Major halal chicken farming venture in Johor

ISKANDAR PUTERI, 9 Oct 2017:

The plan to develop a large-scale halal chicken industry chain is expected to cost more than RM400 million.

Johor Menteri Besar, Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin yesterday said at the project launch the plan would not only focus on the chicken breeders specifically but on the entire halal chicken meat production chain.

“The plan encompasses the entire chicken supply chain, chicken breeding through contract farming, slaughtering and subsequently marketing to facilitate the success of this programme.

“The programme is expected to cost RM420 million, through the cooperation of Fund for Food (3F) from Agrobank, SME Corporation Malaysia and funds from various government agencies will be identified.”

Under the plan, Mohamed Khaled said a total of 80 Bumiputera chicken breeders are expected to develop a production capacity of 24 million chickens by 2023.

He said the development plan would also help in exploring wider business opportunities in the chicken industry network based on the ‘Halalan Toyibban’ concept.

The programme aimed to ensure the stability of chicken supply and meat prices for consumers in Johor particularly, hence supporting the National Food Security Policy initiatives, he added.

The plan, to be implemented in stages from 2017 to 2023, will be spearheaded by Johor Corporation. The programme is expected to start next year.
