DBKL registration needed for Airbnb services in capital city

KUALA LUMPUR, 19 Jan 2018:

Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) will implement the Short Term Rental (STR) programme on housing and residential buildings beginning this year.

Under the programme, the premises would be registered to regulate and monitor the business before a study was conducted to enable the operators to operate legally, said DBKL in a statement .

The STR operators can register their premises online using DBKL’s e-Lesen system by logging on to the website http://elesen.dbkl.gov.my  beginning this month.

It is open to individuals, agents or companies and there is no restriction for non-citizens. Those who register their premises are not charged.

The STR registration conducted for the Companies Commission of Malaysia is to enable the operators to operate legally and under the supervision of DBKL.

STR operators who failed to register their premises are deemed to have committed an offence and legal action may be taken pursuant to the provisions of laws enforced by DBKL, said the statement.

“Short term rental in residential areas has become a revenue generating activity. This is due to the development of information technology where the marketing is done via websites such as Airbnb, HomeAway and iBilik.”
