5 highways to conduct alternate toll-payment trials from September

PUTRAJAYA, 21 March 2023:

Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi today announced alternate toll payment methods will start on five highways from September – using credit and debit cards, instead of being limited to Touch ‘n Go cards.

In a Facebook post, he wrote these five highways are the Sungai Besi Expressway, New Pantai Expressway, Ampang-Kuala Lumpur Elevated Highway, Guthrie Corridor Expressway and the Penang Bridge.

“I would like to emphasise here that efforts towards overcoming this issue had actually started since last year and this has been my main focus when I was given the responsibility of leading this ministry.

“Since the beginning of this year, I have directed planning and discussions with the parties involved and highway concession companies to take steps towards the implementation of the open payment system. I have also participated in various discussions that have been held.”

He explained this implementation of an open toll payment system is among the initial initiatives as a transition to Multi Lane Fast Flow (MLFF) system being worked on.

“I would also like to inform you that MLFF’s Proof of Concept (POC) will be carried out before the end of October 2023 to evaluate the MLFF system before it is implemented for all highways in Malaysia. The location of the POC is under negotiations and will be finalised in the near future.

“MLFF’s full implementation will be conducted in phases by the third quarter of 2024. Through the implementation of the MLFF and open payment system for toll collection for all highways in Malaysia, it will open up opportunities for more eWallet facility providers to participate and there will be no more monopoly by Touch ‘n Go.

“Healthy competition will exist among industry players, which will open up more options for highway users to make toll payments while also providing them with convenience. I hope this effort will get the cooperation of all parties and give comprehensive benefits to all especially the citizens and highway users in this country.”
