Singapore Covid-19 cases pass 20,000 (updated)

SINGAPORE, 6 May 2020:

Singapore has confirmed an additional 788 cases of Covid-19 infections, bringing the latest tally to 20,198.

Its Ministry of Health (MoH) in a statement attributed the “vast majority” of the cases to foreign workers staying at dormitories while 11 cases involved Singaporeans or Permanent Residents.

It reported another two deaths involving the elderly, bringing the number of fatalities to 20.

MoH said the 19th death case involved a 97 year-old female Singaporean, who died on May 5 at the National Centre for Infectious Diseases. Labelled as case 1414, the patient was confirmed to have Covid-19 infection on April 7, and had a history of hypertension.

Meanwhile, the 20th death involved case 1528, a 73 year-old male Singaporean, who died on May 6 at Singapore General Hospital. The elderly was confirmed to have Covid-19 infection on April 7, and had a history of hypertension, hyperlipidaemia and diabetes mellitus.

Singapore reported its first two Covid-19 deaths on March 21.

At present, 1,634 patients have fully recovered from the infection and have been discharged from hospitals or community isolation facilities.

There are currently 1,462 confirmed cases still hospitalised with most in stable condition or improving, while 23 are in critical condition in the intensive care unit.

Meanwhile, 17,082 cases with mild symptoms, or are clinically well, but still tested positive for Covid-19 remain isolated at community facilities.

Of the 788 cases yesterday, there was no imported cases. They comprise 13 cases in the community facilities, 16 work permit holders residing outside dormitories and 759 work permit holders residing in dormitories.

Indonesia has reported 367 new Covid-19 cases and 23 more fatalities, bringing the cumulative figures to 895 deaths and 12,438 positive cases.

The Indonesian government spokesman on Covid-19, Achmad Yurianto, said the new cases and 23 deaths were reported between noon yesterday and noon today.

Achmad said there were 26,932 patients under surveillance for Covid-19 while 2,317 cases have recovered so far.

Jakarta province has recorded the highest death toll at 414, followed by Jawa Timur with 123, Jawa Tengah with 90 and other provinces.

Thailand has reported one new Covid-19 case and another death, bringing the tally to 2,989 cases and 55 fatalities since the outbreak began in January. The new case of infection was a 27-year-old woman who returned from Russia on May 3.

The latest fatality was a 69-year-old Australian hotel manager in the southern province of Phang-nga, said Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration spokesman Thaweesilp Wissanuyothin.

He said the man, who had lung infection and kidney complication, was pronounced dead yesterday. He said 173 patients are being treated at hospitals and 2,761 cases have recovered and been discharged.
