Non-EU passport confusion leads to German airport chaos

BERLIN, 1 March 2019:

Three non-EU nationals have used the passport control for EU nationals at Düsseldorf Airport in western Germany, delaying thousands of passengers, reported local media today.

At press time, the third largest airport in Germany has returned to normal and all the affected terminals have been reopened.

Düsseldorf airport is known for its fast and easy processing at the border control offered to EU citizens. However, non-EU nationals have to go through a different customs control, which takes more time.

The three passengers were mixed in a group of arriving passengers on a flight departing from a non-EU country. Given that the non-EU nationals need to be identified and checked again, three terminals of the airport was temporarily closed.

According to local reports, about 6,500 passengers, including the arriving and departing, were affected by the incident.
