Indonesia’s Covid-19 death toll surges pass 10,000

JAKARTA, 24 Sept 2020:

Indonesia has recorded 4,634 new Covid-19 positive cases in 24 hours, the highest number since the first case was reported on March 2 this year.

Based on the data posted on the official twitter page of the Indonesian National Disaster Management Authority(BNPB), @BNPB_Indonesia today, the cumulative total number of positive cases now stands at 262,022 while 110,910 people are still being monitored for the disease.

From noon yesterday to noon today, 128 fatalities were reported raising the death toll to 10,105.

Jakarta province which has again come under Large-Scale Social Restrictions (PSBB) for two weeks starting Sept 14, is still recording the highest number of positive cases in the republic with 66,731 cases, an increase of 1,044 cases.

The province of East Java recorded the highest death toll at 3,062, followed by Jakarta (1,648), Central Java (1,359) and the rest in other provinces.

Meanwhile, Myanmar recorded close to 4,000 new Covid-19 cases – including more than 70 deaths – within a week, the country’s Health Ministry said today.

A total of 869 new coronavirus cases were registered on yesterday – Myanmar’s highest single-day figure since the start of the outbreak, the ministry said in a statement.

Over the past week, 3,868 infections and 73 virus-related fatalities were confirmed across the country, it added.

With hundreds of cases emerging daily, the government has reimposed domestic travel curbs throughout the country, with major cities, including the commercial hub of Yangon, placed under strict lockdown.

In early September, authorities instructed domestic airlines to suspend all services and also banned entry visas and international flights until the end of the month.

Restrictions have left Yangon’s streets quiet and deserted despite the country’s looming general elections.

Political parties have been unable to campaign and have called for the polls, scheduled for Nov 8, to be postponed in view of public health concerns.

However, Myanmar’s election commission and the ruling National League for Democracy party have rejected the demand, saying there will be no delay in the elections due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Singapore which is already working on a road map for the third and final phase of reopening of its economy and social activities, has preliminarily confirmed 15 new cases of Covid-19 infection in the past 24 hours.

With the latest developments, it takes the total infection tally for the republic to 57,654.

In its brief data released here today, the republic’s Ministry of Health (MoH) said there were five imported cases who had all been placed on Stay-Home Notice upon arrival in Singapore.

“Based on our investigations so far, there are no cases in the community.”

In the full data released late yesterday, the ministry classified 1,029 of the reported cases as imported, 2,244 as community cases and 54,366 involving dorm residents.

MoH said 57,291 cases had fully recovered and been discharged from hospitals or community care facilities.

A total of 36 confirmed cases remain hospitalised but none in the intensive care unit. Meanwhile, 285 patients who have mild symptoms or clinically well but still tested positive for Covid-19 have been isolated and being cared for at community facilities.

To date, 27 people have died from complications due to Covid-19 in the republic.
