HARARE, 5 Dec 2017:
The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) has authorised the resumption of hippopotamus sport hunting in Mozambique.
The 69th meeting of the CITES Standing Committee, which took place in Geneva, Switzerland, last week, overturned the five-year suspension of hippo hunting in Mozambique and the export of trophies.
Hungary, South Africa, Zimbabwe and Malawi were among those countries which supported the resumption.
In 2012, CITES decided to suspend commercial hippo hunting and trophy trafficking when it became clear there was no clarity on the number of hippos in Mozambique – which made it difficult to allocate quotas.
