Poor showing by Malaysian archers in Mexico

KUALA LUMPUR, 20 Oct 2017:

The national archery squad failed to make an impression at the World Archery Championships as only two out of 12 archers advanced to the third round of the meet in Mexico yesterday.

Olympian, Khairul Anuar Mohamad faced stiff competition in the first and second rounds where he had to fight until the shoot-off before edging his opponents.

He defeated Austrian athlete, Dominik Irrasch 10-7 before edging Taylor Worth of Australia in shoot-offs after being held 9-9 in both matches, according to World Archery Federation at www.worldarchery.org.

The Kuala Terengganu-born athlete is slated to meet Wei Chun Heng of Taiwan in the third round.

Khairul Anuar who partnered Haziq Kamaruddin and Muhammad Akmal Nor Hasrin in the team event, failed to keep up his sizzling feat after the trio was beaten 1-5 by South Korea, in the quarter-finals.

Earlier, the national trio defeated Mexico 5-4 in a shoot-off after both teams were tied 26-26.

National women’s compound archer, Fatin Nurfatehah Mat Salleh who received a bye in the opening round, defeated Jody Vermuelen of the Netherlands, 144-142.

The 26-year-old Sabahan will square-off with German archer, Janine Meissner in the third round.
