Fewer tournaments for badminton players who fail KPIs

KUALA LUMPUR, 8 Nov 2017:

Players under the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) fold must keep improving their performances to avoid being dropped once the performance index system is implemented next year.

BAM president Datuk Mohamad Norza Zakaria yesterday said there would be two ‘windows’ to assess the performance of players under the system – one in February and another In August.

“The system was discussed and agreed at the coaching and training committee meeting today. Once implemented all coaches must award ranking points to players based on their performance from time to time.

“Starting 2018, there would be two windows where players who do not live up to expectations will be dropped and replaced players with potential.

“The coaches will introduce an internal ranking system…with the internal ranking system coaches can assess the performance of players.”

Mohamad Norza said the BAM would also introduce guidelines for players to participate in tournaments based on their performances.

He said players in the 1 to 72 bracket will be allowed to compete in a minimum of 12 tournaments while those ranked above 72 can only compete in 10 tournaments.

“Players performing well will be given more chances compared with non performing players. Non performing players shall be rehabilitated to identify each of their performances in each tournament. The BAM together with coaches will set a key performance index (KPI).

“For example, the top four must qualify for the semifinals while the KPI for the top eight is the quarterfinals.”

Mohamad Norza said BAM honorary secretary Datuk Ng Chin Chai would be tasked to become the coordinator between the coaches and the C&T due to the resignation of former BAM technical director Morten Frost in September.
