GOLD COAST, 11 April 2018:
The national diving squad took gold and bronze medals in the women’s 10m synchronised platform at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
In the final held at the Optus Aquatic Centre today, world champion Cheong Jun Hoong paired Pandelela Rinong to score 328.08 points and clinch the gold medal.
Leong Mun Yee-Nur Dhabitah Sabri bagged their second bronze medal after accumulating 308.16 points.
Meaghan Benfeito-Caeli McKay of Canada took the silver with 312.12points.
Earlier, Mun Yee-Nur Dhabitah clinched bronze in the women’s 3m synchronised platform.
Meanwhile, the national trio gymnasts put up a scintillating performance to improve their achievement in the Commonwealth Games after garnering a silver medal tonight.
Malaysia represented by experienced gymnast Amy Kwan Dict Weng and Koi Sie Yan as well as young gymnast, Izzah Amzan collected 127.950 points to take the second place at Coomera Indoor Sports Centre.
“We succeeded in winning a silver medal as our performance has improved from the Glasgow Games when Malaysia won a bronze medal.
“For the competition today, we put up our best display until the last second even though there were mistakes by here and there,” said Amy Kwan. Amy who was also in the Glasgow bronze team four years ago unexpectedly fumbled slightly in the ball and club apparatus.
The trio gold medal went to Cyprus with 130.625 points while the Australia trio won the bronze medal with 120.800 points.
Meanwhile Izzah who was her making Commonwealth Games debut said the experience was a real eye-opener. The 18-year-old gymnast said she performed better than the SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur.
“I did make some small errors but I managed to control the situation,” she also apologised to Malaysians for failing to deliver a gold medal for the national contingent.
For the record, the best gymrama outing for Malaysia was in New Delhi 2010 in which Elaine Koon won a gold (hoop), silver (ball) and two bronze medals for club and ribbon.
