Time for Malaysia to finally have an ombudsman?

KUALA LUMPUR, 24 May 2018:

The government has been urged to set up the ombudsman system to tackle the problem of misconduct among civil servants and the authorities.

Social activist Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said the ombudsman could be a friend and protector of the people who will be entrusted to conduct investigations into misconduct.

“It is time for the Public Complaints Bureau to be upgraded and the ombudsman system set up to look into the complaints of the public about misconduct by certain parties.

“It is similar to what has been implemented in various countries like Sweden and New Zealand.”

The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health chairman said the ombudsman system is crucial in order to correct weakness, leakages and corruption in the government administration.

Meanwhile, Lee said he supported the move to reduce the salary of cabinet ministers by 10% as announced by Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad yesterday.

“”It is a good start. The move will hopefully reduce government expenditure and boost the financial position of the country.”
