KUALA TERENGGANU, 30 Dec 2017:
Terengganu is expected to experience another high tide phenomenon from Jan 2 to 4, said state Disaster Management Committee Secretariat head Lieutenant-Colonel Che Adam Abdul Rahman.
He said the phenomenon could pose risks of coastal erosion and flooding in several low-lying areas in the event of heavy rain at the same time.
“The high tide of up to 2.962m-3.032m is expected to occur at 9.40pm on Jan 2, 10.24pm on Jan 3 and 11.10pm on Jan 4.
“As such, enforcement officers will be placed in several coastal areas to monitor the situation and ensure no visitors there to avoid any untoward incidents.”
Currently, reclamation works are being carried out by several government departments and agencies in several coastal areas in Terengganu, especially in the Tok Jembal beach near Kuala Nerus, which was severly affected by the recent erosion.
Che Adam who is also Terengganu Civil Defence Force director advised the public, especially tourists to stay away from beaches in the state.
Strong northeasterly winds of up to 50-60kph and waves up to 4.5m are expected to occur over the waters off northeast Condore, north of Reef North and northwest Palawan from today until Wednesday, Jan 3.
The Meteorological Department said in a statement strong winds and rough seas were dangerous to all shipping and coastal activities including fishing and ferry services.
Strong northeasterly winds of 40-50 kph with waves up to 3.5m are also expected to occur over the waters off southeast Samui, Condore, central Reef North, Layang-Layang, central Palawan, Tioman and northwest Bunguran during the same period, it said.
The same situation is expected to occur over the waters off Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang as well as East Johor and is dangerous to small boats, recreational sea activities and sea sports.
The statement also said coastal areas of Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang and East Johor are vulnerable to sea level rise from today until Wednesday.
