Stricter censorship ordered for Turkish drama series on Astro

PUTRAJAYA, 2 June 2017:

The Film Censorship Board (LPF) has directed Measat Broadcast Network Systems Sdn Bhd (Astro) to take immediate action to review and censor the contents in the drama series The Magnificent Century – which allegedly contains scenes that are not suitable for the Muslim community.

LPF in a statement today said the broadcast company currently conducted censorship on all the content shown on its channels on its own, without going through the board.

Following complaints from the public, LPF had discussed the matter with Astro on Monday.

“The discussion was attended by the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim) as they had also received complaints from the public.”

The Turkish historical fiction drama series which is aired on Astro Maya HD and Astro Prima tells the story of Suleyman the Magnificent, the longest-reigning Sultan of the Ottoman Empire in the 16th century.

Recently, netizens took to social media to condemn Astro for airing the series – which allegedly contained obscene contents, as well as being derogatory towards Islam and blemishing the history of the Ottoman Empire.
