RM5,000 fine for bribing cop RM50

KUALA LUMPUR, 19 Jan 2021:

The sessions court here today sentenced a taxi driver, who is in the list of wanted persons by the police for a cheating case, to a day’s jail and fined RM5,000 for bribing a policeman of RM50.

Judge Kamarudin Kamsun ordered Beh Por Teik, 56, to serve the sentence today. Beh paid the fine.

He had pleaded guilty to offering the bribe to lance corporal Adam Mohd Alhafiz, of the Dang Wangi police station, as an inducement to not take any action against him.

The offence was committed at Jalan Kuching here at 11am on Sept 16 last year.

According to the facts of the case, lance corporal Adam and a colleague were in a patrol car at Jalan Loke Yew and they were trailing a taxi which was being driven in a suspicious manner before stopping it at Jalan Kuching.

In an inspection using the MCAD (Mobile Card Acceptance Device), Adam found the accused with three previous records and was wanted by the police for a report lodged in Taiping.

When informed he was wanted by the police, Beh showed a RM50 note to Adam. And when told by the policeman that was an offence for corruption to do so, Beh shoved the money into Adam’s hand and asked to be allowed to leave without going to the police station.

The policeman then handcuffed Beh and took him to the Kuala Lumpur MACC office for further action.

Prosecuting officer from MACC, Afiqah Ab Razak, prosecuted, while Beh was unrepresented.

Separately, police have arrested three local men who masqueraded as policemen for suspected involvement in a series of robberies around Taman Melawati, Ampang Jaya last Saturday.

Ampang Jaya district police chief ACP Mohamad Farouk Eshak said the suspects were found to have introduced themselves as policemen before inspecting and seizing their victim’s possessions.

“Police managed to detain a man, 24, at Jalan Taman Melawati at 10.30pm the same night. Investigations then led to the arrest of the suspect’s two other accomplices, aged 24 and 45.

“They targetted victims with small physiques, regardless of gender or age, walking alone,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Mohamad Farouk said all three suspects operated at night wearing civilian clothes and possessed previous criminal records relating to drug, robbery and rioting offences.

“Urine tests were conducted and one of them tested positive for amphetamine.

“Police also seized a Proton Perdana, mobile phones and RM1,060 in cash believed to belong to the suspects,” he said.

He said with the arrests, the police have solved three robberies in the administration area of the Ampang Jaya district police headquarters, adding that the police were tracking down the suspects’ other criminal associates who are still at large.

He said all three suspects have been remanded till Jan 21 and the case is being investigated under Section 395 of the Penal Code.

Their actions went viral on social media and were condemned by netizens.

Penang CID chief SAC Rahimi Mohd Ra’ais confirmed the seven men’s arrest and said that they would be remanded today.

“The case is being investigated under Section 353 of the Penal Code for using criminal force to deter a public servant from discharging his duty, Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation and Regulation 16 of The Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases (Measures Within the Infected Local Areas) (Movement Control) Regulations 2021.”
