Prisoner handiwork chalks up millions in sales

ALOR SETAR, 6 Oct 2017:

The Prisons Department recorded RM34.9 million in the sale of prison products last year, thus increasing its confidence to target an increase in the sale of products worth more than RM35 million this year.

Director-general Datuk Seri Zulkifli  Omar said furniture and handicraft products produced by prisoners were of higher quality and in high demand among the public.

“The sales target is to ensure that inmates put more effort and patience to produce better quality products which are safer to use besides being clean, especially when handling food products thereby, reshaping their lives to exercise patience and practise good values.

“This is our goal. Besides providing awareness to prisoners, we also want to mould them into highly skilled and well-behaved individuals when they are released later,” he said when opening the national-level Malaysian Prisons Department’s Infokraf exhibition 2017 here yesterday.

Zulkifli said various programmes were designed to ensure a more effective rehabilitation of prisoners, especially juvenile offenders.
