Pre-Endemic day 248: Malaysia’s Covid-19 infections pass 5 million

PUTRAJAYA, 5 Dec 2022:

Malaysia’s Covid-19 new daily case reports stayed well below the 2,000 mark as the latest 24 hours under review saw 1,502 persons recording positive tests – with an imported case – to raise the nation’s tally to 5,000,332 infections.

Worryingly, most of the new infections are among those who had already received boosted vaccinations (1,055) or fully vaccinated (301). Unvaccinated persons numbered 138, with eight partially vaccinated.

Selangor (541) reported the highest number of new cases, followed by Kuala Lumpur (160), Melaka (111), Sabah (102) and Kedah (100), while double digits were charted in Penang (92), Perak (74), Sarawak (73), Pahang (46), Kelantan (45), Negeri Sembilan (39), Johor (37), Putrajaya (37), Terengganu (26) and Labuan (10). Only Perlis (9) reported in the single digit.

The 2,093 discharges outpaced new cases as total recoveries rose to 4,941,114 (98.8%) while active cases fell 594 to 22,505 – with 20,889 (92.8%) in home quarantine, 1,512 (6.7%) hospitalised and none at Low-Risk Covid-19 Quarantine and Treatment Centres (PKRC).

Numbers at intensive care units rose to 104 Covid-19 patients, with 70 needing breathing aids.

The grim statistic of lives lost to Covid-19 added three fatalities to raise the death toll to 36,713 – with another two brought-in-dead cases raising this subtotal to 7,816 casualties. The deaths involved two boosted persons and one fully vaccinated.
