Terengganu has no record of gangsterism, according to local police.
Terengganu police chief Datuk Aidi Ismail attributed it to the state’s population being 97% Malays. “In Terengganu, 97% of the population are Malays and they still respect older people in their villages.
“They respect the village chief, imam and bilal. This living culture is an advantage that can prevent gangsterism-related crime.”
He said residents would usually convey to the police, any suspicious activities such as drug abuse by youth in their community.
“For the record, Terengganu’s crime index showed a decrease by 7.3% or 135 cases to 1,705 cases in the first 10 months of this year compared to the same period last year.
“This places Terengganu as the seventh state to record a reduction in the crime index, nationwide.”
Aidi said Terengganu police had solved 76.6% of cases – the highest among the contingents nationwide.
He said the success was achieved following a number of preventive operations and strategic plans carried out by the state police.
