KUALA LUMPUR, 5 Dec 2017:
A trader was fined RM6,000 by the Selayang magistrate’c Court here today after pleading guilty to selling 40 copies of pirated DVDs in October.
Liong Mun Kan, 35, admitted selling DVDs of various titles without the ‘B’ censorship certificate at the Petron petrol station at Bandar Country Homes, Rawang in Gombak here, at 4pm on Oct 20.
The charge under Section 18(4) of the Film Censorship Act 2002 and punishable under Section 18(5) of the same act provides for a fine up to RM30,000 or imprisonment up to three years, or both, upon conviction.
Magistrate Iriane Isabelo ordered Liong to serve six months in jail should he fail to pay the fine. The trader settled the amount.
Deputy public prosecutor Ashwinii Thinakaran appeared for the prosecution, while Liong was unrepresented.
Meanwhile in PETALING JAYA, a jobless man broke down at the magistrate’s court here after being sentenced to four days jail and fined RM1,000 for stealing various food items at a hypermarket three days ago.
Magistrate Zaki Asyraf Zubir ordered Mohammad Nazrul Khairi Mohammad Badri, 31, who pleaded guilty, to serve the jail sentence from the date of his arrest on Dec 2 and an additional one month’s jail if he defaulted on the fine,
The accused had stolen among others onions, bottled water and chocolate altogether valued at RM285.78 at the Aeon Hypermarket at Sunway Pyramid here at 4.40pm on Dec 2.
He was caught by staff of the hypermarket when he tried to leave without paying for the items, which were hidden in his sling bag.
In mitigation, he asked for a lenient sentence saying he had to steal because he had no money and had spent four days on remand.
