KUALA LUMPUR, 10 April 2018:
Election Commission of Malaysia (EC) has received declaration from His Highness Seri Paduka Baginda Yang Di-Pertuan Agong regarding the dissolution of the 13th Parliament on 7 April 2018 – followed by the official announcement by Dewan Rakyat Speaker about the dissolution of the 13th Parliament as well as the speakers of state assemblies and state assemblies for all states.
Therefore, EC held a special meeting today and set that the GE14 must be held in 60 days from the 13th Parliament dissolution date. For the purpose of the GE14, EC has set the dates as follows:
DATE FOR ISSUING WRIT : April 11, 2018 (Wednesday)
NOMINATION DAY : April 28, 2018 (Saturday)
EARLY VOTING DAY : May 5, 2018 (Saturday)
POLLING DAY : May 9, 2018 (Wednesday)
The campaign period has set for 11 days, starting from the Nomination Day until 11.59pm on 8 May 2018.
To run GE14, EC has appointed 222 election officers. Meanwhile, to monitor all election campaign activities throughout official campaign period, EC has formed 445 of Election Campaign Enforcement Teams.
For this election, a total of 259,391 officers among the public citizen had been appointed for the management of GE14. While 8,989 building premises will be used as the voting centres – which consist of 28,995 polling stations (channel) which estimated to require a budget of RM500 million.
The GE14 Electoral Roll to be used for GE14 until fourth quarter of 2017. The Electoral Roll consists of 14,940,624 registered voters which include :
- Regular Voters 14,636,716
- Early Voters (Military and Spouse/ Police) 300,255
- Absentee Voters who are Overseas 3,653
The Electoral Roll will be sold starting on 16 April 2018. Voters can check the electoral roll for further information about the polling centre and channel through EC’s website (www.spr.gov.my) or through the MYSPR SEMAK application or call to 03-88927018 or SMS 15888 starting from 16 April 2018.
With a total of 2,415,074 registered voters, Selangor has the highest number of voters qualified to cast their votes.
According to the EC statistics made available after being gazetted today, 2,388,614 registered voters in Selangor are regular electors; early voters comprising military personnel and their spouses (25,462); and absentee voters who are overseas (998).
Johor recorded the second highest number at 1,817,999, followed by Perak (1,510,864), Sarawak (1,220,960) and Kedah (1,146,492).
Three states with the lowest number of voters were the Federal Territory of Putrajaya 27,306, Labuan (28,356) and Perlis (150,221).
EC had invited 14 countries as international observers for GE14 – which comprise representatives of election management bodies from the Asean, Commonwealth, Asian and European countries as well as a study and support centre for the Malaysian Commonwealth Studies Centre (MCSC) based in Cambridge, UK.
EC had also appointed 14 NGOs and university representatives as the local observers to conduct an observation of the GE14 process starting from Nomination Day until the release of the election results.
International and local observers are allowed to observe in the nomination centres, early voting centres, polling centres, vote-counting centres and vote-tallying centres.
In this regard, EC does not accord recognition to any other organisation or individual other than those it had appointed to monitor and observe GE14.
