Non-lethal guns mulled for prison control

KUALA LUMPUR, 17 April 2018:

The Prison Department is keen to use a Swiss-made high-tech pistol (less lethal weapon) that does not kill but is capable of restricting the movement of aggressive inmates.

Prison Department director-general Datuk Seri Zulkifli Omar said the use of pepper guns wis an effective precautionary measure in line with current needs in managing prisoners in jail.

“This weapon can also be used in the event of fights and riots in prisons.

“It also reduces the risk of injury to the individual shot,” he said, after receiving five units of the less lethal weapon – JPX Piexon – from the company Fortress Defence Sdn Bhd at the Defence Services Asia (DSA) Exhibition and the National Security (Natsec) Asia 2018 here yesterday.

Zulkifli, who received the weapon on behalf of the Prison Department, said they still use the electric shock weapon that could only shoot one individual at any one time.

“But the less lethal JPX Piexon is capable of shooting four individuals at a time.”

Meanwhile, Fortress Defence Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Carliff Ridzwan Carleel said the less lethal JPX Piexon uses special liquid and is capable of shooting at a speed of 685k[h as far as 23 feet.

He said those affected by the gunshot would experience blurry vision – which would restrict their movements.
