A man was sentenced to four days jail by the magistrate’s court here today after pleading guilty to defying the Movement Control Order (MCO).
Magistrate Dzul Elmy Yunus ordered Mohd Ali, 19 to serve the jail sentence from the date of his arrest, which was last March 29, following which, he was then freed.
Mohd was charged with defying the MCO by being out of his house at Batu 4, Jalan Apas here at 8.45pm during the MCO period which is in violation of Rule 3 (1) of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases (Measures Within the Infected Local Areas) Regulations 2020.
In mitigation, Mohd told the court he left his house to look for scrap metal to sell for money to buy food.
Dzul Elmy then told Mohd that he should comply with the MCO and stay home, and to seek assistance from the village head or the state elected representative to obtain essential items.
“I know there is a need for everyone to earn money during this difficult times. But, you need to know that even if you get to find the scrap metal, no one will buy it during MCO period.”
In GEORGE TOWN, the magistrate’s court today sentenced 24 men to Compulsory Attendance Order (PKW) for three months for playing football during the MCO.
Magistrate Rosnee Mohd Radzuan meted the punishment after the offenders aged 25 to 48 pleaded guilty to the charges read to them.
All of them have to report themselves to the Malaysian Prisons Department under the Offenders Compulsory Attendance Act 1954, in which the department will decided the type of community service the offenders have to carry out for three hours a day during the three-month period.
PKW is a community service programme which is an alternative order apart from a jail sentence.
All the accused were charged for gathering to play football at the College General field here, which is an area prohibited under the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases (Measures within the Infected Local Areas) Regulations 2020 at 5.30pm on March 31.
All the men were charged under Regulation 3 (2) of the regulations and is punishable under Regulation 7 (1) of same regulations which carries a RM1,000 fine or six-month jail term or both.
