Three men took less than two minutes to escape with jewellery worth RM15,000 from a goldsmith store at Lebuh Buckingham, here yesterday.
Timur Laut district police chief ACP Anuar Omar said in the 11.30am incident, one of the men entered the shop and punched a worker in the face.
“After hitting the worker, the trio who arrived in two motorcycles ordered three workers who were in the store to place the jewellery items into a bag before fleeing.”
He said police are now studying the closed-circuit television (CCTV) recordings around the premises as the store was not equipped with a CCTV system.
Meanwhile, Seberang Perai Tengah district police chief ACP Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abdul Hamid said police have arrested five men aged between 34 and 58 years old in a raid on a hut in Kampung Janggus, Bukit Mertajam yesterday on suspicion of being involved in the sale of ketum juice.
He said in the 8pm raid police also seized 40 packets believed to contain ketum juice worth RM400 and various processing equipment in the hut which had been used to process and pack the juice.
Separately, two armed men robbed a goldsmith outlet at a shopping mall in Kota Damansara of RM1.1 million worth of jewellery.
Petaling Jaya Police chief ACP Mohd Zani Che Din said the two masked men wore long-sleeve shirts and were armed with machetes.
Four female workers were preparing to start the day’s business at 10.55am when the two men appeared and snatched the shotgun from the security guard, he said.
“The suspects scooped up seven trays of jewellery and fled in a white Nissan Almera car.”
Mohd Zani said investigations revealed the car licence plate was fake and the security guard’s shotgun was found in a drain near a parking lot.
He said workers at the premises were unharmed and he urged witnesses to report to the nearest police station to assist in the investigation.
