KUALA LUMPUR, 27 March 2018:
Members of the public are advised to be more careful regarding the weather and weather alert during the monsoon transition period which began today.
The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MET) said in a statement the monsoon transitional phase would continue until mid-May 2018 – which marked the conclusion of the northeast monsoon season.
“During this period, the country will experience wind which blows from various directions at low speeds.
“The normal weather during this period is heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, strong winds especially in the afternoon and early in the night.”
The storms occur more frequently at the coastal areas of east coast states and the interior of Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah west coast and the western and central areas of Sarawak.
The MET said loud thunderstorms – together with heavy rain and strong wind – could lead to flash floods and destruction of weak structures.
Members of the public could obtain the latest weather information on the MET website www.metgov.my, and the mobile application myCuaca and Rakan MET or the social website Facebook Malaysiamet and Twitter @malaysianmet, SMS 15888 or the hotline number 1300 22 1MET (1638).
