HazMat team help clean up aircraft acid spill

KOTA KINABALU, 14 Sept 2017:

The Fire and Rescue Department took about half an hour to clean up the UN2794 acid which spilled inside a cargo space of an aircraft at the Kota Kinabalu International Airport yesterday.

Sabah Fire and Rescue Operations Centre in a statement said the department used sulphur  powder to clean up the acid and store it in a waste drum before handing  it over to Malaysia Airports Bhd for further action.

“The hazardous materials (HazMat) team tested the acidity of the liquid using pH paper and the reading was pH5.”

It said 10 firefighters in two engines were deployed to the scene following a distress call at 6.15pm.

The aircraft had arrived from KL International Airport.
