KUALA LUMPUR, 22 May 2018:
Two friends were each sentenced to four years’ jail and three strokes of the rotan by the sessions court here yesterday for robbing a Grab driver two months ago.
Judge Zamri Bakar meted the sentence on Azirul Samsudin, 22, and Abdul Manap Sabarin, 24, after they changed their plea to guilty to committing gang robbery on Mohd Akmal Hakimi Othman, 28, in front of Jinjang Baru Flat, Sentul here at 3.30am on March 18.
The offence under Section 395 of the Penal Code carries a maximum sentence of 20 years jail and whipping, upon conviction.
The court ordered both men to serve the sentence from the date of arrest on April 29.
Earlier, both men, who were unrepresented, appealed for a lighter sentence as they had a family to support but deputy public prosecutor Noor Jazilah Mohd Yushaa urged for an appropriate sentence to serve as a lesson and in consideration that the case was of public interest.
Based on the facts of the case, the duo booked the Grab service to take them to Jinjang Baru Flat but upon arrival at Brem Mall, the victim realised that the booking was cancelled.
Nevertheless the victim continued with his journey and on arrival at the Jinjang Baru Flat, one of the accused grabbed him by the neck while the other took his Samsung J7 mobile phone and RM100, before both fled and were arrested on April 29.
Separately in SHAH ALAM, police arrested an army captain, two corporals, ex-captain and a Grab driver in connection with the theft of RM2.6 million from a security company in Sungai Dua, Rawang in three locations last Friday.
The suspects were picked up in Sepang, Putrajaya and Kuantan.
Selangor police chief, Datuk Mazlan Mansor said in the first raid, a 34-year-old army captain was nabbed in Putrajaya about 12.30am.
He said subsequently, the police raided a house in Kuantan at 6.45am, before detaining a former army captain and a corporal in their 30s.
“In that raid, the police found RM715,000 in two bags. Interrogation of the two suspects led to the arrest of another army corporal at a nearby house at 8.25am. “In the second house, the police seized RM100,000 which was found in a bag.”
Mazlan said in a follow-up operation, a 41-year-old Grab driver was arrested about 10pm in Sepang on the same day in connection with the seizure of RM427,897.
Meanwhile, the police chief said three employees of the security company who were nabbed on May 14 – the day of the incident – were released on bail.
“We managed to find some of the money from all the suspects totalling RM1,242,897 and the case is investigated under Section 392/397 of the Penal Code for armed gang robbery as well as Section 8 of the Firearms (Increased Penalties) Act 1971.”
In the alleged theft on May 14, the former army captain was believed to have fled with the RM2.6 million which was kept in a vault at the security company.
It is believed the man, who was also the manager of the Rawang branch of the security company, had reason to sleep-in at the office, before locking up three of his colleagues and fleeing with the money on a motorcycle.
