Several areas in Gombak were hit by flash floods following a two-hour downpour in the capital yesterday.
Selangor Fire and Rescue Department assistant operation director Mohd Sani Harul said several areas among them 7½ Mile Hulu Kelang and Kampung Sungai Pusu were submerged in 0.2-0.5m of water following rain at 4pm.
“The heavy downpour caused Sungai Klang to overflow to nearby housing areas affecting two to four houses but no victims were evacuated.”
Mohd Sani said heavy rain also caused the side of a road at Taman Mulia Jaya, Ampang near here to collapse. “In the 5.30pm incident a Proton Wira car was damaged but no one was injured.”
Separately, 82 people from 22 families in Kampung Sungai Tekali, Hulu Langat were evacuated to a relief centre at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Sg Serai last night due to flash floods.
Mohd Sani said several areas in Hulu Langat were hit by flash floods following a two-hour downpour from 4pm.
Among the affected areas in Hulu Langat were Kampung Pasir, Kampung Sungai Pening and Kampung Seri Nanding.
“The relief centre in Kampung Sungai was inundated by flood waters and all the victims were evacuated to the SK Sg Serai evacuation centre.” Mohd Sani said the affected area was under about 0.3m of flood water.
In SEREMBAN 11 houses in Taman Jasper and Taman Pulasan near here were hit by flash floods following heavy rain yesterday evening.
Seremban District Civil Defence Force officer Mohd Najib Abd Karim said 16 families from the two housing estates were affected by the floods caused by a heavy downpour from 4pm.
“Apart from heavy rain, poor maintenance of the river banks which resulted in erosion also contributed to the flash floods today. So far we have not opened any relief centre and the situation is under control as the flood water has started to recede,” he said in a statement.
In JOHOR BAHRU, a total of 42 flash floods victims from 10 families in Pengerang and Johor Bahru are being housed in three relief centres.
State Health, Environment, Education and Information Committee chairman Datuk Ayub Rahmat said the relief centres are in Kampung Lepau, Kampung Laut Batu 10 and Kampung Sungai Tiram Batu 19, Batu 20.
“Four people from two families in Kampung Lepau are staying at Kampung Lepau which opened at 6.30pm today,” he said in a statement last night.
Kampung Laut Batu 10 has 18 people from four families, Sekolah Kebangsaan Batu 10 has 20 people from four families while Kampung Sungai Tiram Batu 19 dan Batu 20, has 20 people.
Flash floods also hit Kampung Pasir yesterday, but no relief centre were opened.
in PENANG, as at 8am today, 1,040 people from 243 families are still at flood shelters in Penang as compared to 1,313 evacuees from 304 families last night.
A state police flood operations room spokesman five shelters were still in operation in Seberang Perai Utara (SPU) and one in Seberang Perai Tengah (SPT).
“There are 820 evacuees from 178 in the shelters in SPU while the Dewan Banjir Guar Jering shelter in SPT is still accomodating 220 people from 65 families,” he told Bernama.
The weather took a turn for the better overnight. Penang was hit by its worst ever floods last weekend. The disaster claimed seven lives.
