Fire destroys 4 godowns near Penang airport

GEORGE TOWN, 30 March 2018:

Four godowns near the Batu Maung Second Air Cargo Complex, near here were destroyed in a fire last night.

Penang Fire and Rescue Department director Saadon Moktar said the four godowns stored used items, light snacks, furniture and electrical goods.

He said the department received a call at 10.50pm and six fire engines, together with 15 volunteer fire engines, were rushed to the scene.

“We have identified the source of the fire as a godown storing used items. But only one office located in front of the godowns was totally destroyed.

“Three other godown offices were not burned, but the whole godowns behind the offices were completed razed. I estimate that 70% of the whole area measuring 300 feet long and 200 feet wide were affected.”

Saadon said no casualty was reported, the cause of fire and total losses are still being investigated.

Although the fire affected the rear part of the godowns as well as the airport runway, he it did not affect operations at the Penang International Airport (LTAPP) and aircraft could in fact land at the airport.

Thick smoke from the fire could be seen 1km away.

A spokesman from LTAPP said in a statement the fire near the airport area did not affect operations there.
