Drunk drove against traffic flow on North-South Expressway near Penang

KEPALA BATAS, 8 July 2019:

Police had detained a man for being drunk and driving against the traffic flow on the North-South Expressway (NSE) from the direction of the Bertam Toll Plaza here to the Sungai Dua Toll Plaza, Butterworth early this morning.

North Seberang Perai district police chief, ACP Noorzainy Mohd Noor said that the 56-year-old man drove for about 9km against traffic flow before he was detained in the incident at 2.15am.

‘’Highway police patrolmen receiving a report on the incident from NSE personnel immediately went to the location and detained the driver who had stopped at the Smart Tag lane at the Sungai Dua Toll Plaza.”

He said preliminary investigation found the man – who was driving while intoxicated – had just left a night club on the island for home in Bukit Tambun, near here.

The man, who was driving alone, claimed he took the wrong road and ended up at the Bertam Toll Plaza. Upon his arrival there, he realised that he was heading in the wrong direction – before making a turn on the same route by driving against the traffic flow.

‘’His action was not only dangerous but could have also caused mishap to him and other road users. Luckily, there were not many vehicles on the road when he was driving against the traffic flow because it was early morning.”

He said the man was detained for further investigation under Section 45A and Section 42 of the Road Transport Act 1987.
