Drunk driver almost rammed Penang police roadblock

GEORGE TOWN, 31 May 2020:

An elderly man who was driving under the influence of alcohol nearly rammed his vehicle into a roadblock near Queensbay Mall, Bayan Baru near here last night.

Southwest district police chief Supt AA Anbalagan said several policemen who were manning the roadblock luckily managed to avoid the vehicle in the incident at about 10.30pm last night.

“The 64-year-old who lives in Taman Lip Sin here was driving a Ford Fiesta from Queensbay Mall to the city centre and was told to stop at a police roadblock under Ops Mabuk.

“But, the driver refused to stop and kept on driving, he even nearly drove into the policemen on duty at the roadblock. Police managed to stop the car and apprehend him, the man acted aggressively and verbally abused the policemen,” he said today.

He said the man was found to be driving under the influence of alcohol as his breath test reading was 218 microgrammes (mg)/100 millimetres (ml) of breath. The permissible limit is 35mg/100 ml.

Anbalagan said the elderly man was taken to Bayan Lepas Police Station for a second screening and has been remanded for further investigation.

The case is being investigated under Section 45A of the Road Transport Act 1987 for driving under the influence of alcohol which carries a fine of between RM1,000 and RM6,000 and jail of up to 12 months and Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing police from carrying out their duty which carries a jail term of up to two years or a fine of up to RM10,000 or both upon conviction, he added.

In TELUK INTAN, two teenagers – engrossed in performing stunts on a motorcycle, the zig zag and wheelie – without wearing helmets were arrested at Ops Covid-19 in Langkap yesterday.

Hilir Perak district police chief ACP Mohd Marzukhi Mohd Mokhtar said in the 6pm incident, the EX5 motorcycle rider and his pillion buddy, both 17, were engaged in an activity that could endanger himself and other road users.

“The teenagers were unaware that their actions were being watched by members of the Hilir Perak police headquarters.

“Police immediately followed them and ordered them to stop for further action.” Mohd Marzukhi said both the teens were arrested under Section 42 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

In ALOR SETAR, 15 women who participated in a Zumba fitness exercise at a premises in Taman Pekan Baru, Sungai Petani, have been issued compound of RM1,000 each for defying the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO).

Kuala Muda district police chief ACP Adzli Abu Shah said they were caught doing so by a police team during a CMCO patrol in the area at 6.30pm on Friday.

All the women, aged between 25 and 50, could not provide valid reasons for gathering at the premises, he said in a statement today.
