Deaths in Kajang old folks home fire

KUALA LUMPUR, 13 Dec 2017:

A fire early today at a double-storey bungalow in Sungai Long, Kajang – used as an old folks’ home – resulted in the deaths of five people, according to the Selangor Fire and Rescue Department.

Assistant director of operations Mohd Sani Harul said no other details were available as yet on the fire and the total number of people affected.

Kajang district police chief ACP Ahmad Dzaffir Mohd Yussof is scheduled to hold a press conference on the incident.

Mohd Sani said the department was summoned at about 5am and quickly sent 15 fire-fighters from the Kajang and Bangi fire and rescue stations.

“The fire was at a double-storey bungalow being used as an old folks’ home.”

Separately, four people – two elderly couple and two of their grandsons – who were thought to have died in a fire in Tanjung Sepat, Sepang, today are believed to have been murdered and their bodies torched, according to police.

Selangor Criminal Investigation Department chief SAC Fadzil Ahmat said the police detected stab wounds on three of the bodies.

Fire-fighters found the bodies of Chia Tee Nang, 73, his wife Lim Mai Shak, 68, and their grandsons Chia Yuan Bin, three, and Ryan Chia Zeng Xi, nine, who were cousins, after putting out the fire which destroyed the 80 ft by 80 ft single-storey wooden house in Jalan Tepi Laut.

Mohd Sani said the department responded to a call at 6.08am.

Kuala Langat District Police chief Supt Azizan Tukiman said the 12-year-old boy who escaped from the house was the elder brother of Ryan Chia.

However, he was in a state of trauma and was under treatment at the Banting Hospital, he said.

He also said that a forensics team had gathered evidence at the scene.
