KUALA LUMPUR, 19 June 2020:
A senior police officer was arrested by the Selangor Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) yesterday for allegedly receiving a RM20,000 bribe.
Selangor MACC director Datuk Alias Salim said the 40-year-old officer was arrested at the Selangor MACC office at about 5.30pm.
“The suspect is believed to have solicited for and received a bribe from a complainant as an inducement to help speed up insurance claims for an accident case.”
Meanwhile, police have arrested 42 Chinese nationals including two women in raids on several units of a condominium in Jalan Tun Razak here – which were used for conducting online gambling activities.
Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Seri Mazlan Lazim said the suspects, aged between 23 and 35, were rounded up in the operations which began at 5.30pm on Tuesday.
“The syndicate sent hundreds of WeChat, Whatsapp and QQChat messages to its customers in China and has been operating for about two months,” he said in a statement.
“The rental for each unit is about RM6,500 and the estimated salary of each worker is between RM2,500 and RM3,000. They operated from 9am to 9pm daily and the syndicate workers would man the computers and mobile phones.”
Mazlan said police seized 24 computers, 273 handphones, a laptop and other types of equipment used in running the gambling operation.
The suspects have been remanded for 14 days until July 1 for investigation under Section 4(1)(c) and Section 4(1)(g) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953, and Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63.
Separately, a trader was charged in the sessions court here with five counts of cheating an Iraqi woman in relation to the sale of face masks worth of RM300,000.
Lee Wai Kuen, 29, pleaded not guilty to all the charges read out to him before judge Hasbullah Adam.
He was accused of cheating Asal Ameen Taha by deceiving her to give him RM300,000 for the purchase of the face masks.
He allegedly committed the offence at the Pearl Condominium lobby and Unit A-18-01 Bintang Goldhill, Jalan Tun Razak here between 2.53pm and 11.51pm on March 14.
The charge under Section 420 of the Penal Code provides for a maximum jail term of 10 years with whipping and fine, on conviction.
Deputy public prosecutor Annur Atiqah Abd Hadi suggested bail of RM400,000 in one surety for all the five charges, provided the accused surrenders his passport to the court.
Lawyer K.A Ramu, representing the accused, requested for a lower bail, saying his client had cooperated during the investigation.
The court granted him bail at RM35,000 in one surety on all the charges and ordered him to surrender his passport to the court. It set July 23 for case mention.
