Almost 10 million vehicles on Malaysian roads have no insurance coverage or road tax

SEREMBAN, 14 May 2018:

Approximately 28 million vehicles are registered with the Road Transport Department (RTD) nationwide, said deputy director general RTD (Planning/Operations) Datuk Wan Ahmad Uzir Wan Sulaiman.

But of the total, he said only 19 million vehicle owners have been actively renewing their road tax and vehicle insurance.

“The rest who own vehicles do not renew their road tax and vehicle insurance,” he said, adding that the RTD had since late March come up wth an ‘offer’ which allowed the defaulters whose road tax expiry was not more than three years, to go through the normal process.

The ‘offer’ came into force on March 27 and will end on June 30, he said after a public auction at the Negeri Sembilan RTD office here today.

Wan Ahmad Uzir said vehicle renewals could be made at any state RTD office. The exercise has also received the support and cooperation from insurance companies.
