SHAH ALAM, 21 Oct 2020:
Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd’s responsibility is only as a water supply operator and to monitor the water intake site to ensure clean raw water supply is channelled to consumers, explained chief executive officer Suhaimi Kamaralzaman.
He outlined that enforcement regarding the pollution of raw water supply is undertaken by the Selangor Water Management Board (LUAS) and several related agencies.
“Our task when there is contamination (of raw water supply) is to cease operation (of the water treatment plant (WTP)) and do our best to provide information as fast as possible to consumers.”
He noted that four WTPs – namely Sungai Selangor Phase 1, Phase 2, Phase 3 and Rantau Panjang – were forced to stop six times this year due to contamination in rivers.
The stop work order at all four plants have caused unscheduled water disruptions to over 1.2 million consumers in the Klang Valley.
A total of 1,196,457 Air Selangor account holders in 1,292 areas in the Klang Valley experienced an unscheduled water disruption after four Sungai Selangor WTPs ceased operations due to contamination on Monday.
The operations of Phase 1, Phase 2, Phase 3 and Rantau Panjang Sungai Selangor WTP were forced to stop after pollution was detected at the raw water source in Sungai Selangor at about 2am.
Water supply has been restored to 90%, with the latest in Hulu Selangor – where the supply was fully restored at noon today.
Corporate communications head Elina Baseri said efforts are being made to restore the supply to the remaining 130 areas.
She said Kuala Selangor recorded the highest recovery at 99.6%, followed by Petaling (98%), Kuala Lumpur (97%), Gombak (78%), Klang/Shah Alam (70%) and Kuala Langat (50%).
She called for cooperation among consumers to use water sparingly so that the process of restoring the supply to the remaining areas can be done smoothly and according to schedule.
