ALOR SETAR, 13 Nov 2017:
A policeman was sentenced to 20 months’ jail and fined RM20,000 by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Special Court here yesterday, when he was found guilty on two counts of accepting a RM200 bribe in 2015.
Judge Zanol Rashid Hussain meted out the sentence on Azahar Abdul Aziz, 53 – who was a detective sergeant at the Narcotics Branch in the Kulim police headquarters – when the defence failed to raise reasonable doubt on the prosecution’s case.
For each of the charges, the court ordered Azahar to serve 10 months’ jail and pay RM10,000 fine in default 100 days’ imprisonment.
However, the court allowed the prison sentence on Azahar to be postponed, pending appeal by his counsel.
MACC is the protector and last line of defence of the people to ensure the country is completely free of corruption and abuse of power, said Sabah Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan.
He said the community must give full support to the MACC’s efforts to combat the immoral symptoms and become the agency’s eyes and ears to report on any corruption and abuse of power in their respective areas. “Your support is very important.”
Pairin said the MACC under chief commissioner Tan Sri Dzulkifli Ahmad’s leadership, is seen as a proactive preventive agency in handling high-profile cases of those involved in corruption and abuse of power.
