Welfare home forced to put beds in garage

NIBONG TEBAL, 5 May 2018:

Due to space constraints, 28 elderly residents at Rumah Persatuan Kebajikan Jayam Sri Laxmi Home Care in Jawi near here are forced to sleep in a garage located opposite the welfare home.

Its operator P. Jayanthi, 43, said the rented house – which accommodates its multiracial residents – is only 650 sq feet in size and that it could not house all the occupants at any one time.

“We are feeling sorry for these elderly people because they are forced to sleep outside the house. When it rains, they will get wet. Not much can be done as the house I am renting is small.”

As such, the single mother – who opened the welfare home since 2014 – said she needed assistance from various parties to help ease the burden of the senior citizens there.

“I do not mind working hard to support the elderly here but the water bills are just too high. It can fetch up to RM300 per month. When I went to the state government’s office to ask for a reduction, the bills did not go down. Instead, it went up to RM400.”
