KUALA LUMPUR, 1 March 2018:
Universiti Malaya (UM) has made a steady improvement among the world’s leading universities by having seven of its academic disciplines ranked within the top 50 in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2018.
They are Library and Information Management ranked 24th; Electrical and Electronic Engineering (30th); Development Studies (30th); Mechanical, Aeronautical and Manufacturing Engineering (41st); Chemical Engineering (42nd); Civil and Structural Engineering (46th); and Mineral and Mining (47th).
In a statement, UM said it also recorded 21 subjects ranked in the world top 100 this year, an improvement from 19 subjects in 2017.
“The record achievement of the five engineering subjects in the top 50 has helped to propel UM’s Engineering and Technology to the 22nd place, from 35th in 2017, in the broad subject area.”
In the Social Science and Management category, UM reached the 45th spot in the rankings (from 71st in 2017) while in the Arts and Humanities category, UM is now ranked 65th (from 85th in 2017).
UM vice-chancellor Datuk Abdul Rahim Hashim attributed the university’s achievement in the subject rankings to the high productivity of its staff and their commitment and dedication to outstanding research and teaching, while striving for excellence in performing their duties.
“The rankings result reflects the international recognition of the quality of UM’s faculty and graduates.”
