Rolling barriers in Subang reduced road accidents by 94%

KUALA LUMPUR, 10 Aug 2017:

Installation of the safety rolling barriers at Jalan Lapangan Terbang  Subang has reduced road accidents by 94% within six months, the Dewan Rakyat was told yesterday.

Deputy Works Minister Datuk Rosnah Rashid Shirlin said as such, the installation of the safety barrier would be extended from the KL International Airport (KLIA) roundabout to the KLIA highway at Sepang later this month.

Based on the effective installation of the barriers in Subang-  which was completed on Dec 14, last year – the ministry plans to extend it to new areas by focusing on accident-prone locations, he said in response to a question from Datuk Seri Dr Muhammad Leo Michael Toyad Abdullah (BN-Mukah).

She said the factors leading directly or indirectly to the drop in accident rate was because the safety rolling barriers had better safety features compared to the conventional road safety barriers.

Rosnah said among the features was  that it had a clearer light reflection, especially at night, the ability to absorb shock energy and reduce the impact of the collision on the vehicle and driver.

The Ministry is currently implementing the cost benefit analysis as the cost of installing the barrier is RM1,500 per metre, that is six times more expensive than the conventional barrier at RM250 per metre, she said.
