Oppo F5 may see end of digital camera reign

KUALA LUMPUR, 3 Nov 2017:

Banking on its focus on selfie cameras, China smartphone firm Oppo has unveiled an enhanced 20 megapixel sensor camera device which comes with software that offers breathtaking image capture capabilities that rival high-end digital cameras.

With the F5 mid-range mobile device, Oppo has finally released its much-vaunted artificial intelligence-driven ‘Beauty Recognition’ technology – which comes with both Bokeh capabilities and ability to compensate for lighting shortfalls – to capture images in the same way the human eye operates.

“The AI Beauty Recognition technology simply emulates the abilities of a professional photographer, who would bring years and years of technical skills and experience when taking a portrait,” said Oppo Malaysia product manager Ken Ng at yesterday’s launch.

“Every selfie lover has their own kind of beauty and something unique about themselves. For example, enhancements will not be soft or feminine for male subjects. Children or babies will not receive enhancements that make them look like adults.

“This technology is an intelligent system which records more than 200 facial recognition spots of a face. Hence, no matter what the facial expression or shot angle is, this technology can give you the most appropriate beautification enhancement.”

Better yet, the image software enhancement is also available in video mode – a major advance in mid-range smartphones – though the F5 still lacks the optical image stabiliser to compensate for jerky movements.

This device, which also comes with a 16 megapixel back camera and running on Android 7.1, will be available from Nov 11 – just two days after other major Asian markets like India and Philippines – and pre-orders have opened for the RM1,298 priced F5 with 32GB ROM and 4GB RAM.

The higher 64GB storage device, with 6GB RAM will be available from mid-December with an indicative price of RM1,598 and Oppo has also announced a cheaper version dubbed F5 Youth – reportedly to have a lowed 12 megapixel front image sensor and to be priced just below RM1,000 when available early next year.
