Melaka govt pushing for more food outlets to be halal-certified

ALOR GAJAH, 27 May 2018:

The new Melaka state government has urged restaurant, resort and hotel operators in the state to acquire halal certification to optimise the halal food industry that is rapidly growing in the country.

Chief Minister Adly Zahari said through halal certification, the confidence of consumers – especially those who are Muslims – in syariah-compliant food selection would also increase.

“We also greatly encourage kitchens in resorts and hotels to secure halal certification to enable Muslims to visit the premises without being perturbed by feelings of doubt, especially throughout the month of Ramadan, as breaking fast events are often held.

“As such, we will further intensify promotions of halal products and food, especially as a tourism state which had recorded the highest number of tourist visits last year, with a total of 16.79 million tourists.”

Bernama earlier reported that only 34 out of 314 resort and hotel kitchens in Melaka had obtained halal certification. From the total, only two were from five-star rated resort and hotels, four-star (11), three-star (15), two-star (2) and non-rated ones (four).
