The joy of a mass wedding reception held at the Pasir Gudang Municipal Council Indoor Stadium yesterday saw 24 couples in the Pasir Gudang and Tebrau parliamentary constituencies tie the knot.
The mass wedding was organised by the Pasir Gudang Municipal Council (MPPG) with the cooperation of the Johor Islamic Religious Department.
Security guard Mohamad Sarpan, 47, and his bride, factory worker Nurul Farhanah Ibrahim, 29, were among the couples who opted for the mass wedding.
Mohamad said he and his wife were neighbours at Taman Cendana, Pasir Gudang, and they were introduced by friends and family members.
“It has been nearly six years and finally we are able to marry. It is costly to get married, but through this mass wedding programme, we only had to spend RM1,000 to buy the wedding costume and pay for make-up service.”
Another couple – Mohammed Fikri Mohd Abdul Rahman, 25, and Nur Husnina Mohd Zuki, 25, from Taman Air Biru, Pasir Gudang – initially planned to get married next year.
“But we still could not save enough (for the wedding) and we are indeed very grateful to MPPG to organise this mass wedding. We jumped at the opportunity,” said Mohammed Fikri, a petrol station supervisor.
The couples were married by officials from the Johor Bahru Kadi Office led by kadi Dzulkafli Mohamed, followed by the wedding reception at noon.
About 20,000 people comprising family members and friends attended the event held from 9am to 5pm.
Tiram assemblyman Datuk Maulizan Bujang said the mass wedding reception was aimed at helping couples with income below RM3,000 to tie the knot.
