KUALA LUMPUR, 24 June 2017:
The Malaysian Conservation Alliance for Tigers (MYCAT) has urged road users to ensure safety during this ‘balik kampung’ season, by taking into consideration the Malaysian wildlife.
The MYCAT said in a statement irresponsible road behaviour – such as driving above the regulated speed limit, tailgating and overtaking dangerously – had led to many incidences of road kill.
“The increased volume of vehicles prior to and after such festivities can prove fatal to any species that try to cross for various reasons.”
A leopard was found dead on Thursday – close to the Sungai Yu eco-viaduct near Merapoh in Pahang – and a baby elephant was tragically killed last week by the roadside of the Gerik-Jeli Highway in Gerik, Perak.
“Spare a thought about road safety and slow down, for the sake of you, your passengers and Malaysian wildlife.”
