The police yesterday received seven electric bicycles to enable them to conduct patrol in public areas.
Penang pPolice chief Datuk Chuah Ghee Lye said the use of electric bicycles for patrol aims to reduce crime rate in tourists areas and shopping malls.
“We receive seven battery-powered bicycles donated by three private firms. Three bicycles will be used by the Tourist Police Unit and two each by Batu Feringghi police station in Timur Laut district and Queensbay in Barat Daya district.”
The China-made bicycles costing RM3,680 can be recharged using electricity and reach a distance of up to 50km at a speed of 25kph.
Chuah said the bicycles could also enable policemen to interact with members of the public and tourists while on patrol using the ‘Stop & Talk’ concept.
Penang is the first state to use of electric bicycles during police patrol.
“A comprehensive study on the suitability of the bicycles will be conducted. If there is a positive effect, we will propose to Bukit Aman to use electric bicycles nationwide.”
